This project was carried out on behalf of Bootham boarding and day school set in the heart of York city centre. The school has made substantial investment erecting a new porter’s lodge, implement shed and professional play tennis courts in the grounds of the school as well as a new walkway access linking all of these new facilities.

The Porters Lodge now greets all arrivals to the school premises, constructed using a bespoke timber frame structure together with glulam beams. The foundations were constructed of in situ suspended concrete slab supported on perimeter in situ concrete ground beams and tubular steel piles. The building envelope, as noted above, is made up of a timber frame with a mixture of facing brick and cedar board cladding, together with triple glazed timber windows and doors.

The roof structure uses glulam timber beams, timber rafters and plywood decking with a Sarnafil single ply membrane roof with a Sedum “green” roof covering complete with irrigation system.

Mechanical installations included the provision of air source heat pumps to run under floor heating, toilet and kitchen facilities. Electrical installations included lighting, power, intruder and fire alarms, data linked to school system and external voice communication to main school. Internal finishings included dry lining, decoration and floor coverings throughout. External works included block paving to pedestrian areas, tarmacadam to car park, landscaping, and associated drainage.

The Implement Shed construction involved tubular steel piling supporting a reinforced concrete raft with a steel frame above. The envelope comprised block walls clad with cedar boarding, a plywood roof deck on timber joists finished with a Sarnafil single ply membrane roof with a Sarnafil “Green” Sedum covering incorporating an irrigation system.
